According to Shopify, between 2011 and 2016, sales among the largest retailers in the ecommerce subscription market rose from $57 million to $2.6 billion. Between 2013 and 2016, visits to top subscription box websites increased 2,963% from 722,000 to 21.4 million
At one time, Book of the Month Club boasted over 550,000 monthly subscribers, but over time, especially in the 1990s and 2000s as the Internet upended the publishing industry, subscriber growth declined and the company’s print mail marketing proved costly and inefficient.
Book of the Month Club CEO John Lippman and Blake Orlandi saw an opportunity to turn around the Book of the Month Club, which enjoyed great brand name recognition, but needed a reboot to compete effectively.
Blake Orlandi received his MBA from Harvard Business School and his experience at Deloitte Consulting and Evergreen Copyrights, where he led the M&A and business development team at the music publishing startup, gave him many of the important tools he would need to help lead the turnaround.
